University is the oldest, largest and most selective private institution
in South Carolina. Founded in 1826, Furman moved three times in its early
years before being charted as Furman University and settling in Greenville
in 1850. The most recent move was in 1961, when Furman relocated to its
current 800-acre location on the outskirts of Greenville.

This park commemorates the Greenville native's career and his title as "The World's Greatest Slugger." Although his batting average ranked as third-best of all time, it wasn't enough to prevent Joe's banishment from baseball during the infamous scandal of the Chicago "Black Sox." |

Gowensville, take SC 14 south for 2.2 miles and then turn right on SC 414.
Go another 1.1 miles and turn left on Pleasant Hill RD. Go another four-tenths
of a mile and turn right on Campbell`s Bridge RD. A quarter mile down is
South Carolina`s only remaining covered bridge. It was built in 1909 and
remains well preserved. |

Greenville's first church occupies a park-like setting in the midst of downtown. The brick sanctuary, built in the early 19th century, adapts Gothic style in the vernacular. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the church is available for tours with advance notice. In its quiet cemetery lie the remains of Vardry McBee, Greenville's founding father. |
